The ECOWAS pumpkin market surged to $X in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate buoyant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Pumpkin Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, pumpkin production rose markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 65%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Niger (X tons) remains the largest pumpkin producing country in ECOWAS, comprising approx. 71% of total volume. Moreover, pumpkin production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), fourfold. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.4% share.
In Niger, pumpkin production increased at an average annual rate of +23.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+2.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+0.1% per year).
The average pumpkin yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, dropping by -9.4% against the previous year. The yield indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin yield increased by +18.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were harvested in ECOWAS; jumping by 20% on the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin harvested area decreased by -14.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pumpkin production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Pumpkin Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, the amount of pumpkin (squash and gourds) exported in ECOWAS reached X tons, increasing by 10% against the year before. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 309% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 231% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Ghana represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 63% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Gambia (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pumpkin exports from Ghana stood at +17.7%. At the same time, Gambia (+62.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +62.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+50 p.p.) and Gambia (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-54.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Gambia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total exports.
Gambia, with a CAGR of +68.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Pumpkin Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
Pumpkin imports declined slightly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -3.7% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 42%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Cabo Verde represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 70% of total imports. Liberia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (8.3%). Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Cabo Verde increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+60.1%) and Liberia (+56.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +60.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mali (-3.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (-5.5%) and Nigeria (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cabo Verde, Liberia and Senegal increased by +14, +13 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pumpkin (squash and gourds) in ECOWAS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Liberia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 10% share.
In Cabo Verde, pumpkin imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Liberia (+46.3% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-3.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
