In 2022, approx. X tons of pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms were exported in ECOWAS; falling by -39.2% compared with 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 208%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 387%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Senegal was the major exporter of pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together comprising a 43% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 2.5% share.
In Senegal, exports of pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms shrank by an average annual rate of -7.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-2.2% per year) and Ghana (-24.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 58%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Pure Polyvinyl Chloride in Primary Forms
Imports in ECOWAS
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms decreased by -5.4% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +79.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, imports of pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 49% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (16%) and Senegal (6.5%). The following importers - Togo (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) - each finished at a 4.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms imports into Nigeria stood at +4.0%. At the same time, Togo (+14.1%), Guinea (+12.6%), Senegal (+12.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+10.0%) and Ghana (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +14.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+6.1 p.p.) and Senegal (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-11.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms in ECOWAS, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +11.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+11.0% per year) and Ghana (+8.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for pure polyvinyl chloride in primary forms increased by +91.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
