Rabbit Meat Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS rabbit meat market declined to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Sierra Leone (X tons) remains the largest rabbit meat producing country in ECOWAS, comprising approx. 98% of total volume. It was followed by Ghana (X tons), with a 1.5% share of total production.

In Sierra Leone, rabbit meat production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.

The average rabbit meat yield stood at X kg per head in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 0.1%. In 2020, overseas shipments of rabbit or hare meat decreased by 0% to X kg, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 456% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rabbit meat exports totaled $X in 2020. In general, exports faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 303% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2020, which is down by -58.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 960%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2020, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Cote d'Ivoire.

From 2012 to 2020, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Cote d'Ivoire amounted to -7.0% per year.

Rabbit Meat Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of rabbit or hare meat imported in ECOWAS shrank to X tons, falling by -8.6% on the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 59%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rabbit meat imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Benin (X tons) and Mali (X tons) represented the major importers of rabbit or hare meat in 2022, finishing at approx. 29% and 25% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Niger (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons), together making up a 38% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +33.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mali ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rabbit or hare meat in ECOWAS, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 12% share.

In Mali, rabbit meat imports expanded at an average annual rate of +26.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Benin (-15.3% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 36% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
