Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, the amount of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings exported in ECOWAS contracted dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -40% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 250% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, railway track fixture exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 1,042%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Benin dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Nigeria (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Benin increased at an average annual rate of +21.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+45.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +45.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Benin and Nigeria increased by +64 and +3.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Benin ($X) remains the largest railway track fixture supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Benin totaled +17.6%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -17.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 926%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Nigeria amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (-3.6%).

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, supplies from abroad of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings increased by 7.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 588%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, railway track fixture imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 571%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings, generating 46% of total imports. Guinea (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (14%) and Senegal (12%). Benin (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of +64.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
