The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Guinea-Bissau (X tons), with a combined 90% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in ECOWAS

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries decreased by -79.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 2,472%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 954%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Benin prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X kg), Ghana (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg), together constituting an 18% share of total exports. Mali (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Benin decreased at an average annual rate of -21.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+21.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012-2022. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mali (-6.1%) and Nigeria (-36.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Benin (+77 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+7 p.p.) and Ghana (+4.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -92.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) emerged as the largest raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Mali, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana stood at +20.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+23.5% per year) and Mali (+7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 246%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries increased by 104% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a prominent expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 92% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +100.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries in ECOWAS, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 4% share.

In Nigeria, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports expanded at an average annual rate of +120.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+16.5% per year) and Ghana (-0.4% per year).

Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
