In 2022, exports of recovered paper in ECOWAS dropped significantly to X tons, which is down by -22.5% against 2021. In general, exports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, recovered paper exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 65%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Ghana (X tons) represented the main exporter of recovered paper, committing 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together mixing up a 39% share of total exports. Benin (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Ghana decreased at an average annual rate of -4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+10.4%) and Senegal (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-5.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (-10.6%) and Nigeria (-37.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+32 p.p.), Togo (+5.9 p.p.), Senegal (+5.6 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.8 p.p.) and Benin (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -52.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total exports.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +13.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -6.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+11.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, overseas purchases of recovered paper were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 87%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, recovered paper imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 70%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Ghana represented the largest importer of recovered paper in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Nigeria (19%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 95% share of total imports.
Ghana, with a CAGR of +0.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
