Exports in ECOWAS
Roasted coffee substitutes exports shrank to X tons in 2021, waning by -2.1% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 1,757%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 1,108% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Mali (X tons) represented the key exporter of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes, committing 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X kg) and Cote d'Ivoire (X kg), together making up a 21% share of total exports. Senegal (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes exports, with a CAGR of +58.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.3%) and Togo (-19.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mali (+73 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-70.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Togo ($X) and Mali ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 77% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +34.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 53%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Roasted Coffee Substitutes Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, purchases abroad of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 60%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Burkina Faso (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) represented roughly 71% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), committing a 17% share of total imports. Benin (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes in ECOWAS, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 4.9% share.
In Cabo Verde, roasted coffee substitutes imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-0.9% per year) and Burkina Faso (-4.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, roasted coffee substitutes import price increased by +53.1% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
