Paper Bag Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS paper bag market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Paper Bag Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, paper bag production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas shipments of sacks and bags of paper decreased by -42.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, paper bag exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 92% of total exports in 2021. Nigeria (X tons) and Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Senegal ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 92% of total exports. Nigeria and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.5%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +42.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Paper Bag Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

For the sixth year in a row, ECOWAS recorded growth in purchases abroad of sacks and bags of paper, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper bag imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2021. Togo (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Mali (X tons) and Benin (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +30.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Togo and Benin, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +15.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 7.1% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mali ($X per ton) and Ghana ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) and Togo ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
