Sausage Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in the ECOWAS sausage market, when its value increased by 11% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Sausage Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, sausage production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, shipments abroad of sausages and similar products of meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sausage exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 45% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together committing a 47% share of total exports. Cabo Verde (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Gambia (with a CAGR of +54.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 74% of total exports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +32.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -24% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 76% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, purchases abroad of sausages and similar products of meat increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, sausage imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Sierra Leone (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Benin (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons), together constituting a 52% share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+25.1%), Sierra Leone (+13.0%), Togo (+12.9%), Cabo Verde (+4.5%) and Liberia (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +25.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Benin (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+8.6 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.1 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cabo Verde (-3 p.p.), Liberia (-7.9 p.p.) and Benin (-12.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sausages and similar products of meat in ECOWAS, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with an 11% share.

In Ghana, sausage imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sierra Leone (+10.1% per year) and Cabo Verde (+4.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
