The ECOWAS scouring pastes and powders market dropped markedly to $X in 2021, falling by -17.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of scouring pastes and powders increased by 1.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +10.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, scouring pastes and powders exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 83%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), generating a 6.8% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to scouring pastes and powders exports from Senegal stood at +3.4%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+45.3%) and Ghana (+35.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +45.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+6.5 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Senegal (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest scouring pastes and powders supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 4.8% share of total exports.

In Senegal, scouring pastes and powders exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+42.5% per year) and Ghana (+41.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas purchases of scouring pastes and powders decreased by -7.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, scouring pastes and powders imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cabo Verde (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the major importers of scouring pastes and powders in 2021, resulting at approx. 26% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Niger (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.1% share, followed by Guinea (7.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (6.9%), Mali (6.1%) and Burkina Faso (6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X), Senegal ($X) and Guinea ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 52% share of total imports.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +13.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, falling by -10.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
