Self-Adhesive Paper Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the ECOWAS self-adhesive paper market, when its value decreased by -5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption recorded buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Self-Adhesive Paper Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, self-adhesive paper production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of self-adhesive paper and paperboard, when their volume decreased by -32.9% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, self-adhesive paper exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together creating a 40% share of total exports. Togo (X kg) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to self-adhesive paper exports from Nigeria stood at -13.0%. At the same time, Togo (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +4.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-9.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+6.3 p.p.) and Togo (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -2.2% and -4.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 85% of total exports. Togo lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 5.7%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +12.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 182% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, imports of self-adhesive paper and paperboard in ECOWAS rose slightly to X tons, increasing by 4.9% against 2020. In general, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, self-adhesive paper imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 55% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (13%) and Senegal (5.1%).

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the self-adhesive paper and paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+13.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+9.7%) and Senegal (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Nigeria (+13 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-3.2 p.p.) and Senegal (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 88% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +16.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
