In 2021, shipments abroad of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers decreased by -45.5% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, full-rotation excavator exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 56% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X units) held a 9.1% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.3%), Senegal (7.3%), Niger (5.5%) and Nigeria (5.5%). Cabo Verde (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to full-rotation excavator exports from Burkina Faso stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Niger (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.4%), Senegal (-2.4%), Cabo Verde (-9.7%) and Nigeria (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Burkina Faso (+33 p.p.), Niger (+4.4 p.p.), Ghana (+3.8 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2 p.p.) and Senegal (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cabo Verde and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) emerged as the largest full-rotation excavator supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Burkina Faso totaled +2.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+5.6% per year) and Nigeria (-1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Cabo Verde ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers decreased by -18.4% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, full-rotation excavator imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units), Ghana (X units) and Guinea (X units) represented the largest importer of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers in ECOWAS, achieving 63% of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Mali (7.3%) and Senegal (6.7%). Togo (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +64.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Guinea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo, which together accounted for a further 23%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +50.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
