In 2022, the ECOWAS semiconductor thyristor market increased by 0.2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor thyristor production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 101% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, shipments abroad of semiconductor thyristors, diacs and triacs was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 128%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor thyristor exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sierra Leone was the major exporter of semiconductor thyristors, diacs and triacs in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. Niger (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X units) and Mali (X units). All these countries together took near 28% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Sierra Leone was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor thyristors, diacs and triacs exports, with a CAGR of +65.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+52.4%) and Niger (+31.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mali (-24.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sierra Leone, Niger and Ghana increased by +69, +15 and +7.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest semiconductor thyristor supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Mali, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sierra Leone amounted to +43.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+51.3% per year) and Mali (-21.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X units of semiconductor thyristors, diacs and triacs were imported in ECOWAS; with an increase of 87% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 123%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor thyristor imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 61% of total imports. Ghana (X units) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Liberia (7.2%) and Niger (5.7%). Senegal (X units), Guinea (X units) and Mali (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -6.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+40.7%), Guinea (+33.3%), Ghana (+31.4%), Niger (+22.7%), Senegal (+12.2%) and Liberia (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +40.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana, Niger, Liberia, Guinea, Senegal and Mali increased by +12, +5.1, +3.9, +3.5, +2.9 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semiconductor thyristors, diacs and triacs in ECOWAS, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Liberia ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +23.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Liberia (+13.0% per year) and Ghana (+17.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 168% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
