The ECOWAS sheepskin and lambskin market contracted to $X in 2021, which is down by -5.1% against the previous year. Sheepskin And Lambskin Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 108%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Nigeria (X tons) remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin producing country in ECOWAS, comprising approx. 46% of total volume. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Senegal (X tons), threefold. Burkina Faso (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Nigeria totaled +2.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Senegal (+5.2% per year) and Burkina Faso (+1.4% per year).

The average sheepskin and lambskin yield expanded slightly to X kg per head in 2021, surging by 2% against 2020. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the sheepskin and lambskin yield reached the peak level at X kg per head in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in ECOWAS rose modestly to X heads, picking up by 1.8% compared with the previous year's figure. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.9%. The level of producing animals peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Sheepskin And Lambskin Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, exports of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in ECOWAS fell significantly to X tons, waning by -16.4% compared with the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 14%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 59%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 42% of total exports. Benin (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together held near 55% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheepskin and lambskin exports from Senegal stood at -11.4%. At the same time, Benin (+45.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +45.7% from 2012-2021. Togo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.4%) and Burkina Faso (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Benin (+20 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.6 p.p.) and Togo (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Senegal (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplying countries in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +7.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 51% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sheepskin And Lambskin Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, the amount of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) imported in ECOWAS plummeted to X tons, which is down by -27.1% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 264%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 261% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the main importer of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), achieving 71% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Gambia (X tons), together committing a 20% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) imports, with a CAGR of +39.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+34.9%), Gambia (+34.8%), Senegal (+28.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+16.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Nigeria (+40 p.p.) and Gambia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-18.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in ECOWAS, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 1.8% share.

In Nigeria, sheepskin and lambskin imports expanded at an average annual rate of +36.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-3.1% per year) and Senegal (-0.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 92%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
