Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, purchases abroad of shelled hazelnuts was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 975%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 319%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Senegal was the major importer of shelled hazelnuts in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 63% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons) and Benin (X tons), together constituting a 37% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to shelled hazelnut imports into Senegal stood at -3.3%. At the same time, Benin (+44.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +44.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-24.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+62 p.p.), Nigeria (+18 p.p.) and Benin (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported shelled hazelnuts in ECOWAS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (-14.9% per year) and Benin (+54.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -69.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 165% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+33.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
