In 2022, the ECOWAS knitted ski-suit market decreased by -33.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed a perceptible slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles exported in ECOWAS reduced modestly to X units, declining by -4.8% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 346% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knitted ski-suit exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 275%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 80% of total exports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Niger (X units). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nigeria (X units) and Mali (X units) - each accounted for a 3.9% share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles exports, with a CAGR of +40.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-6.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (-8.8%) and Niger (-50.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+71 p.p.) and Niger (+7.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-14.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-62.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest knitted ski-suit supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 6.8% share.

In Senegal, knitted ski-suit exports increased at an average annual rate of +44.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-7.6% per year) and Niger (-50.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles, when their volume decreased by -36.4% to X units. In general, imports recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 406% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, knitted ski-suit imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 318%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 95% of total imports in 2022. Liberia (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles imports, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia increased by +78 and +1.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles in ECOWAS, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Liberia ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 127% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire amounted to $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Liberia (-0.9%).
