Cote d'Ivoire was the key importer of slaked lime in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 39% of total imports in 2021. Burkina Faso (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Nigeria (11%), Senegal (11%), Liberia (7.5%), Togo (5.7%) and Ghana (5%).

At the same time, Togo (+106.4%), Liberia (+14.4%), Senegal (+6.7%), Nigeria (+3.7%) and Ghana (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +106.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+13 p.p.), Togo (+5.7 p.p.), Liberia (+4.8 p.p.), Senegal (+3.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -14.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Togo, Ghana and Liberia, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +101.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
