In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use, when their volume increased by 22% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use expanded to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 6%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire prevails in use structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together making up a 15% share of total exports. Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+9.2%) and Ghana (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+6.4 p.p.) and Ghana (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -8.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest soap in bars other than for toilet use supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with an 8.1% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, exports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use contracted by an average annual rate of -8.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+3.6% per year) and Ghana (+10.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -14.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas purchases of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Niger (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons) represented roughly 84% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Gambia (X tons), constituting a 5.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Gambia (with a CAGR of +40.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Niger ($X), Senegal ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +39.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -14.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
