Starter Motor Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS starter motor market reached $X in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Starter Motor Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, starter motor production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ECOWAS

Starter motor exports soared to X units in 2021, picking up by 49% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 160% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, starter motor exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 144%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sierra Leone represented the largest exporter of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 41% of total exports in 2021. Togo (X units) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (11%), Cote d'Ivoire (8.9%), Mali (6.6%) and Ghana (6.4%). Senegal (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to starter motor exports from Sierra Leone stood at +16.8%. At the same time, Togo (+63.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+49.3%), Ghana (+21.0%), Nigeria (+16.9%), Senegal (+15.4%) and Mali (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +63.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +17 and +7.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) emerged as the largest starter motor supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.3% share.

In Sierra Leone, starter motor exports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+15.7% per year) and Ghana (+27.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Starter Motor Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, starter motor imports in ECOWAS surged to X units, growing by 21% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, starter motor imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the major importer of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Guinea (X units), Mali (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units), together making up a 40% share of total imports. Niger (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to starter motor imports into Ghana stood at -3.9%. At the same time, Niger (+19.3%), Guinea (+16.6%), Mali (+11.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-7.0%) and Nigeria (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Guinea (+5.7 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.6 p.p.), Niger (+3.3 p.p.) and Mali (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Burkina Faso and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -18.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 61% of total imports. These countries were followed by Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +18.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
