Stranded Wire Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, the amount of stranded wire, ropes and cables exported in ECOWAS contracted to X tons, which is down by -7.3% on the year before. In general, exports saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, stranded wire exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Sierra Leone (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the main exporter of stranded wire, ropes and cables in ECOWAS, constituting 66% of total export. Ghana (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9.8% share, followed by Guinea (6.5%), Liberia (5.9%) and Burkina Faso (5.3%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of +73.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 70% share of total exports. Senegal, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +52.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Stranded Wire Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, the amount of stranded wire, ropes and cables imported in ECOWAS contracted rapidly to X tons, dropping by -41.9% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 67%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, stranded wire imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 52%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importers of stranded wire, ropes and cables in ECOWAS, together resulting at approx. 52% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Senegal (8.1%), Mali (6%) and Guinea (5.6%). Liberia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest stranded wire importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together accounting for 60% of total imports. Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
Mali, with a CAGR of +22.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
