Strawberry Market Size in ECOWAS
In 2022, the ECOWAS strawberry market decreased by -4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw tangible growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Strawberry Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, strawberry production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 316%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of strawberry production was Sierra Leone (X tons), accounting for 66% of total volume. Moreover, strawberry production in Sierra Leone exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Liberia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Guinea (X tons), with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Sierra Leone amounted to +1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Liberia (+1.9% per year) and Guinea (+1.5% per year).
Strawberry Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, overseas shipments of strawberries decreased by -66.1% to X kg, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 626,060%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, strawberry exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 890,562%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X kg) was the key exporter of strawberries, comprising 90% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X kg), committing a 10% share of total exports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the strawberries exports, with a CAGR of -21.1% from 2012 to 2022. Ghana (-22.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+7.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -1.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest strawberry supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled -20.6%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -9.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+20.0%).
Strawberry Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, strawberry imports in ECOWAS declined to X tons, waning by -13% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, strawberry imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the main importer of strawberries, committing 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together creating a 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.7% share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +23.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+70.5%), Cabo Verde (+28.3%), Guinea (+26.5%), Senegal (+23.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.7%) and Ghana (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +70.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+24 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+6.7 p.p.) and Mali (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-7.9 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-26.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest strawberry importing markets in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports. Ghana, Senegal, Guinea and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.6%.
Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +62.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 9.6%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
