The ECOWAS pasta and couscous market rose sharply to $X in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +8.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 44%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous, when their volume decreased by -85.9% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, pasta and couscous exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Togo (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the major exporter of stuffed pasta and couscous in ECOWAS, creating 75% of total export. Benin (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - each reached an 8.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +38.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pasta and couscous supplying countries in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Niger ($X), with a combined 61% share of total exports. Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +25.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 34%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous decreased by -1.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 54%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pasta and couscous imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +17.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Togo was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 44% of total imports. Niger (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Senegal (8.8%) and Burkina Faso (7.4%). The following importers - Mali (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - together made up 9.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +19.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pasta and couscous importing markets in ECOWAS were Togo ($X), Niger ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 67% of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +11.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
