Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sulphides of non-metals and commercial phosphorus trisulphide decreased by -11.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 428%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sulphides of non-metals imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 249%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Togo represented the key importer of sulphides of non-metals and commercial phosphorus trisulphide in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 71% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together generating a 28% share of total imports.

Imports into Togo increased at an average annual rate of +26.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+27.8%) and Mali (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +27.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo and Senegal increased by +45 and +11 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest sulphides of non-metals importing markets in ECOWAS were Togo ($X), Mali ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Senegal lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 13%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +7.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -42.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 128% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-6.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
