Surgical Glove Market Size in ECOWAS
The ECOWAS surgical glove market contracted to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -9.3% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Surgical Glove Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, surgical glove production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 58%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, the amount of surgical gloves exported in ECOWAS dropped sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -33.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 225%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, surgical glove exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 277%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Senegal was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 40% of total exports. Mali (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Sierra Leone (13%), Ghana (10%), Togo (9.9%), Benin (5.7%) and Nigeria (5.2%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to surgical glove exports from Senegal stood at +28.5%. At the same time, Ghana (+75.1%), Benin (+39.1%), Togo (+35.8%) and Sierra Leone (+31.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +75.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.4%) and Mali (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+30 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+10 p.p.), Ghana (+10 p.p.), Togo (+8.5 p.p.) and Benin (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-13.3 p.p.) and Mali (-47.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest surgical glove supplying countries in ECOWAS were Sierra Leone ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mali ($X), together accounting for 67% of total exports. Benin, Togo, Ghana and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Ghana, with a CAGR of +51.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Surgical Glove Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, approx. X tons of surgical gloves were imported in ECOWAS; growing by 18% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, surgical glove imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the major importer of surgical gloves in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Ghana (9.4%) and Togo (7.2%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Benin (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to surgical glove imports into Nigeria stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Togo (+45.6%), Benin (+17.1%), Senegal (+7.6%) and Burkina Faso (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +45.6% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Togo (+7 p.p.), Senegal (+4 p.p.) and Benin (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -4.1% and -9.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported surgical gloves in ECOWAS, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to -1.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+3.4% per year) and Senegal (+9.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -28.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 80%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
