Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of syringes, with or without needles exported in ECOWAS skyrocketed to X units, rising by 39% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 76%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, syringe exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Togo (X units) was the key exporter of syringes, with or without needles, committing 41% of total exports. Cabo Verde (X units) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (11%), Niger (8.4%), Liberia (7%), Burkina Faso (6.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.8%).

Exports from Togo increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+82.2%), Niger (+39.5%), Senegal (+9.8%), Burkina Faso (+8.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +82.2% from 2012-2022. Cabo Verde experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Cabo Verde (+19 p.p.), Niger (+8.4 p.p.) and Liberia (+7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Togo (-18.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest syringe supplying countries in ECOWAS were Togo ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Niger ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +374.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per thousand units, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 54%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per thousand units. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per thousand units), while Senegal ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (-2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Syringe Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of syringes, with or without needles imported in ECOWAS contracted to X units, falling by -9.9% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, syringe imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of syringes, with or without needles, namely Nigeria, Togo and Ghana, represented more than half of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea (6.7%) and Mali (6.2%). The following importers - Benin (X units) and Niger (X units) - together made up 6.3% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +32.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest syringe importing markets in ECOWAS were Togo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports.

Togo, with a CAGR of +46.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per thousand units, with an increase of 149% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a buoyant increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per thousand units), while Ghana ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
