In 2021, the ECOWAS non-chicken table egg market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption posted a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Non-Chicken Table Egg Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, non-chicken table egg production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Liberia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), with a combined 94% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, approx. X tons of table eggs, excluding hen eggs were exported in ECOWAS; rising by 114% compared with the previous year. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 136%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 257% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the main exporter of table eggs, excluding hen eggs, creating 74% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons). All these countries together took near 23% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the table eggs, excluding hen eggs exports, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+8.9%) and Ghana (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire increased by +16 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +13.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -12.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 84% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, purchases abroad of table eggs, excluding hen eggs was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 227%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 194%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Guinea-Bissau was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Liberia (X tons), constituting a 29% share of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Liberia (with a CAGR of +80.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Guinea-Bissau ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported table eggs, excluding hen eggs in ECOWAS, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Liberia ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Guinea-Bissau stood at +18.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Liberia (+63.1% per year) and Cabo Verde (+23.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
