In 2022, overseas shipments of telephonic or telegraphic switching apparatus decreased by -0.5% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 79%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria represented the key exporter of telephonic or telegraphic switching apparatus in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near 56% of total exports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Ghana (10%) and Benin (4.7%). Mali (X units), Senegal (X units) and Togo (X units) took a little share of total exports.

In Nigeria, telephonic switching apparatus exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+6.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+0.6% per year).

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

Telephonic switching apparatus imports totaled X units in 2022, growing by 4% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 322%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, telephonic switching apparatus imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Nigeria dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was near 67% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Senegal (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units), together mixing up a 19% share of total imports. Mali (X units), Togo (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to telephonic switching apparatus imports into Nigeria stood at +9.8%. At the same time, Senegal (+11.2%), Togo (+9.0%) and Ghana (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2022. Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-1.0%) and Mali (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+17 p.p.) and Senegal (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Burkina Faso, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Mali saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -4.5%, -5.4% and -7.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported telephonic or telegraphic switching apparatus in ECOWAS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 5.8% share.

In Nigeria, telephonic switching apparatus imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (-3.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-1.8% per year).
