Market Size for Titanium Ores and Concentrates in ECOWAS

After three years of decline, the ECOWAS titanium ore and concentrate market increased by 13% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption saw prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Titanium Ores and Concentrates in ECOWAS

In value terms, titanium ore and concentrate production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 130% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Titanium ore and concentrate exports plummeted to X tons in 2022, which is down by -16.3% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, titanium ore and concentrate exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 76%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sierra Leone (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) dominates exports structure, together constituting 96% of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +56.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest titanium ore and concentrate supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

In Sierra Leone, titanium ore and concentrate exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+29.7% per year) and Nigeria (+11.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of titanium ores and concentrates imported in ECOWAS reduced notably to X tons, declining by -63% against 2021. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 14,586% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, titanium ore and concentrate imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 12,798%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of titanium ores and concentrates in ECOWAS, mixing up 99% of total import.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the titanium ores and concentrates imports, with a CAGR of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022. Nigeria (+57 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported titanium ores and concentrates in ECOWAS.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at -1.4%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline.
