In 2022, the ECOWAS tomato puree market decreased by -3.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of tomato puree and paste, when their volume increased by 27% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 158% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tomato puree exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 147% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Ghana represented the main exporter of tomato puree and paste in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 44% of total exports in 2022. Togo (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (14%), Senegal (12%) and Mali (5%). Niger (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +17.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+62.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+36.8%) and Senegal (+19.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +62.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Niger (-4.5%) and Mali (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+20 p.p.), Togo (+19 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+12 p.p.) and Senegal (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Niger and Mali saw its share reduced by -12.6% and -17.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest tomato puree supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to +23.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+20.0% per year) and Togo (+50.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -14.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of tomato puree and paste decreased by -3.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tomato puree imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Ghana was the key importer of tomato puree and paste in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 29% of total imports in 2022. Togo (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Benin (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Niger (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Guinea (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 60% share of total imports. Gambia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into Ghana decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+12.3%), Togo (+6.5%), Niger (+6.2%), Senegal (+4.9%), Guinea (+4.3%), Benin (+4.2%) and Burkina Faso (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +12.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Gambia (-1.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+7.8 p.p.), Benin (+6.2 p.p.), Ghana (+4.6 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+4.5 p.p.), Senegal (+4 p.p.), Niger (+3.7 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+2.9 p.p.), Guinea (+2.9 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomato puree and paste in ECOWAS, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to -5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (-3.5% per year) and Senegal (+4.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 11%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
