Toothpaste Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS toothpaste market dropped to $X in 2021, which is down by -11.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +15.4% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, toothpaste production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices decreased by -58.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, toothpaste exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 44% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (20%) and Cote d'Ivoire (14%).

Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -15.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-15.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-25.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Nigeria increased by +21 and +6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 88% of total exports. Ghana lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 11%.

Among the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +10.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices decreased by -18.2% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, toothpaste imports reduced to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) were the largest importers of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, together making up 85% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest toothpaste importing markets in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Guinea ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +19.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
