Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas shipments of umbrellas decreased by -40.6% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, umbrella exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 35%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Senegal (X units), together generating a 34% share of total exports. Togo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the umbrellas exports, with a CAGR of +6.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-1.9%), Nigeria (-16.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-19.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+48 p.p.), Senegal (+5.1 p.p.) and Togo (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-13.8 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-32.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +4.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of umbrellas, when their volume decreased by -14.6% to X units. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 27%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +100.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X units), distantly followed by Guinea (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Nigeria (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Liberia (X units) were the major importers of umbrellas, together mixing up 93% of total imports. Gambia (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +36.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest umbrella importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Guinea ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +31.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
