Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 98% of total exports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the uncoated kraft liner exports, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012 to 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+73 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -2.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest uncoated kraft liner supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 2% share of total exports.

In Senegal, uncoated kraft liner exports increased at an average annual rate of +20.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, uncoated kraft liner export price decreased by -16.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 78% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+2.3%).

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, the amount of uncoated kraft liner imported in ECOWAS fell to X tons, shrinking by -12.2% on the year before. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the key importers of uncoated kraft liner, together achieving 95% of total imports. Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +35.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Senegal and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Among the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +38.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Nigeria ($X per ton) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) and Togo ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
