The ECOWAS uncooked pasta market contracted to $X in 2021, declining by -8.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Uncooked Pasta Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, uncooked pasta production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Uncooked Pasta Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
For the third consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded decline in overseas shipments of uncooked pasta, which decreased by -49% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 179%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, uncooked pasta exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 221%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the main exporter of uncooked pasta in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (9.3%) and Nigeria (7.9%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncooked pasta exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at -8.7%. At the same time, Nigeria (+39.6%) and Senegal (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +39.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Togo (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+9.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+7.7 p.p.) and Togo (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -3.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest uncooked pasta supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.
In Cote d'Ivoire, uncooked pasta exports declined by an average annual rate of -12.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+4.5% per year) and Nigeria (+26.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -16.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 15%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Uncooked Pasta Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
Uncooked pasta imports dropped to X tons in 2021, which is down by -9% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 78%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, uncooked pasta imports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 82%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ghana (X tons) was the largest importer of uncooked pasta, committing 32% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), Niger (X tons), Togo (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Gambia (X tons), together making up a 50% share of total imports. Mali (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncooked pasta imports into Ghana stood at +17.1%. At the same time, Togo (+27.9%), Gambia (+15.8%), Benin (+15.3%), Niger (+7.1%), Mali (+3.3%) and Burkina Faso (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2021. Ghana (+11 p.p.), Togo (+7.9 p.p.), Benin (+3.5 p.p.) and Gambia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -4.4%, -5.2% and -11.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported uncooked pasta in ECOWAS, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Benin, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana amounted to +15.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Niger (+9.6% per year) and Benin (+16.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Niger ($X per ton) and Mali ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) and Togo ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
