Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved and frozen vegetable exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 289%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the key exporter of vegetables (preserved, frozen), making up 38% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Niger (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together comprising a 58% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +55.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest preserved and frozen vegetable supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire stood at +29.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+40.9% per year) and Senegal (+13.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 30%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

For the fifth consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded growth in purchases abroad of vegetables (preserved, frozen), which increased by 2.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 55%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, preserved and frozen vegetable imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 51%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the five major importers of vegetables (preserved, frozen), namely Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Cabo Verde, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), committing a 4.9% share of total imports. Mali (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +46.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 52% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Cabo Verde, Mali and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +47.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
