Veneer Sheet Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2022, the ECOWAS veneer sheet market decreased by -0.6% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, veneer sheet production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise, when their volume decreased by -11.2% to X square meters. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 68%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, veneer sheet exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 120% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the main exporting country with an export of around X square meters, which reached 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X square meters), creating a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +3.2%).

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of -2.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per square meter in 2022, with a decrease of -18.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per square meter), while Ghana totaled $X per square meter.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (-1.9%).

Veneer Sheet Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, supplies from abroad of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise decreased by -9.9% to X square meters, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 576% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, veneer sheet imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 453%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X square meters) was the major importer of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise in ECOWAS, committing 100% of total import.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise imports, with a CAGR of +101.8% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Nigeria (+87 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
