Wheat Starch Market Size in ECOWAS

After six years of growth, the ECOWAS wheat starch market decreased by -15.2% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, wheat starch production fell significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 52%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, wheat starch exports in ECOWAS fell markedly to X tons, which is down by -92.1% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports recorded a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 1,525%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wheat starch exports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 4,814%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the major exporters of wheat starch in ECOWAS, together achieving 79% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (8%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest wheat starch supplying countries in ECOWAS were Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +27.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -72.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 202% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+23.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Wheat Starch Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, purchases abroad of wheat starch increased by 34% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 702%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, wheat starch imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 1,456% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons), creating a 4.5% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheat starch imports, with a CAGR of +39.5% from 2012 to 2021. Mali (-24.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+94 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mali saw its share reduced by -85.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat starch in ECOWAS, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 0.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +58.8%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mali stood at $X per ton.
