In 2020, the amount of wind powered generating sets exported in ECOWAS soared to X units, with an increase of 100% compared with 2019. Over the period under review, exports posted resilient growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wind powered generator exports totaled $X in 2020. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 25,011%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2020, falling by -42.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 a decrease of -42.7%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire totaled $X per unit.
From 2014 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (0.0%).
Wind Powered Generator Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of wind powered generating sets decreased by -79.6% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 359% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, wind powered generator imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Niger (X units) represented the largest importer of wind powered generating sets, comprising 58% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Cabo Verde (X units) and Nigeria (X units). All these countries together held approx. 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea (X units), Senegal (X units) and Togo (X units) - together made up 7.4% of total imports.
Niger was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wind powered generating sets imports, with a CAGR of +89.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+37.0%), Burkina Faso (+27.3%), Togo (+11.9%), Cabo Verde (+10.3%) and Nigeria (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Niger (+58 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+12 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+3.4 p.p.) and Guinea (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-2.2 p.p.) and Senegal (-4.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest wind powered generator importing markets in ECOWAS were Cabo Verde ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Guinea ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports. Nigeria, Niger, Togo and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
Niger, with a CAGR of +76.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 184% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a deep reduction. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
