Exports in ECOWAS
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of window or wall air conditioning systems, self-contained or split-systems decreased by -10.3% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of window or wall air conditioning systems, self-contained or split-systems dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Senegal was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which resulted at 70% of total exports. Togo (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (4.5%). The following exporters - Ghana (X units), Mali (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Niger (X units) - together made up 12% of total exports.
Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+19.3%), Mali (+18.1%), Togo (+16.6%), Ghana (+12.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo, Senegal, Mali and Ghana increased by +7.9, +7.5, +2.6 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest window, wall, or split air conditioning system supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal totaled +4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+15.4% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 15%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, purchases abroad of window or wall air conditioning systems, self-contained or split-systems decreased by -11.2% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 104%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of window or wall air conditioning systems, self-contained or split-systems reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 78%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X units) represented the key importer of window or wall air conditioning systems, self-contained or split-systems, mixing up 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Guinea (X units), together committing a 41% share of total imports. Senegal (X units), Mali (X units) and Niger (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to window, wall, or split air conditioning system imports into Nigeria stood at +2.4%. At the same time, Guinea (+17.7%), Niger (+17.0%), Mali (+12.8%), Ghana (+8.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.4%) and Senegal (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana (+5.8 p.p.) and Guinea (+5.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -13% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported window or wall air conditioning systems, self-contained or split-systems in ECOWAS, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+3.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
