In value terms, women knitwear exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 294%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), Sierra Leone (X units), Togo (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Ghana (X units) and Senegal (X units) was the main exporter of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted) in ECOWAS, mixing up 93% of total export. Mali (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +59.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 66% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Senegal and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +62.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 89%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted) increased by 134% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after six years of decline. In general, imports showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 197%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, women knitwear imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the major importer of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted) in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. Guinea (X units) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (20%) and Liberia (6.7%).

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted) imports, with a CAGR of +56.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+40.1%) and Guinea (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria, Guinea and Liberia increased by +50, +12 and +6.3 percentage points, respectively.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 62% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
