Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of worked flat glass, when their volume increased by 466% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, worked flat glass exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nigeria was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), creating an 11% share of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the worked flat glass exports, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012 to 2021. Ghana (-25.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+85 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-85.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest worked flat glass supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 1.1% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, worked flat glass exports increased at an average annual rate of +49.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 182% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate significant growth. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+8.1%).

Worked Flat Glass Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, approx. X tons of worked flat glass were imported in ECOWAS; with an increase of 30% on 2020. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, worked flat glass imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Ghana dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2021. Benin (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Togo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+46.1%), Togo (+30.2%) and Sierra Leone (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +46.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Benin (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+7.2 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Benin saw its share reduced by -2.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported worked flat glass in ECOWAS, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 3.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana totaled +9.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Benin (+0.8% per year) and Senegal (+37.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, worked flat glass import price increased by +73.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
