Man-Made Filament Fabric Market Size in ECOWAS

After seven years of growth, the ECOWAS man-made filament fabric market decreased by -10.3% to $X in 2021. In 2021, the amount of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers exported in ECOWAS was estimated at X tons, with an increase of 3.4% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, man-made filament fabric exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Gambia dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to man-made filament fabric exports from Gambia stood at -3.1%. At the same time, Ghana (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2021. Ghana (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Gambia saw its share reduced by -3.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Gambia ($X) remains the largest man-made filament fabric supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports.

In Gambia, man-made filament fabric exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Ghana stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+4.3%).

After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers decreased by -9.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, man-made filament fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the largest importer of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers in ECOWAS, generating 65% of total import. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Benin (X tons), together making up a 31% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +19.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest man-made filament fabric importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Gambia ($X), together comprising 58% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +26.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
