Wrapping Papers Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the ECOWAS wrapping papers market, when its value decreased by -3.6% to $X. In general, consumption, however, recorded strong growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Wrapping Papers Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, wrapping papers production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production faced a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas shipments of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 48% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X tons). All these countries together held near 45% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard. At the same time, Senegal (+16.9%) and Nigeria (+16.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal and Nigeria increased by +16 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 94% of total exports. Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 1.7%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +17.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Wrapping Papers Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, when their volume decreased by -7.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, wrapping papers imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the key importers of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, together generating 90% of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +26.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wrapping papers importing markets in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Burkina Faso and Togo, which together accounted for a further 14%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
