Garlic Market Size in Ecuador

The Ecuadorian garlic market shrank dramatically to $X in 2022, waning by -37.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw perceptible growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Garlic Production in Ecuador

In value terms, garlic production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the average garlic yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 245%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 292% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for garlic exports from Ecuador, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, garlic exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), sixfold. France (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain totaled +42.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+29.1% per year) and France (+10.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for garlic exported from Ecuador were Spain ($X), France ($X) and Switzerland ($X), together accounting for 78% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Canada and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Over the period under review, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic export price decreased by -24.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+27.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of garlic were imported into Ecuador; reducing by -41.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 432%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
