Beef Market Size in Egypt

For the third consecutive year, the Egyptian beef market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -19.9% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Beef Production in Egypt

In value terms, beef production declined notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 713%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the average beef yield in Egypt dropped slightly to X kg per head, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 22%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the average beef yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for beef production in Egypt; which is down by -11.1% on 2020. In general, the number of producing animals recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 7.4%. Over the period under review, this number reached the peak level at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Egypt

Beef exports from Egypt contracted dramatically to X tons in 2021, dropping by -20.5% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, posted a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 398% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beef exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 83%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the main destinations of beef exports from Egypt, with a combined 43% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +199.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Kenya ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for beef exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 42% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, India, Kuwait, Senegal and Oman, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Among the main countries of destination, Senegal, with a CAGR of +177.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average beef export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 677%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+151.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Beef Imports

Imports into Egypt

In 2021, overseas purchases of beef (cattle meat) decreased by -28.5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 603%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beef imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 44%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest beef supplier to Egypt, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, beef imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), threefold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +13.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-5.5% per year) and Colombia (+28.0% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of beef (cattle meat) to Egypt, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India stood at +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-9.7% per year) and Colombia (+22.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average beef import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 152% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Brazil ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton), while the price for Colombia ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
