Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for carob exports from Egypt, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, carob exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Libya (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kuwait (X tons), with a 9.7% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia totaled +1.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Libya (+307.8% per year) and Kuwait (+12.4% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for carob exports from Egypt, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Libya ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 9.7% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Libya (+299.5% per year) and Kuwait (+67.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average carob export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 45%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of carob decreased by -10.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 68%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, carob imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cyprus (X tons) was the main carob supplier to Egypt, with a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon (X tons), with a 2.1% share of total imports.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Cyprus totaled +11.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lebanon (+22.6% per year) and Turkey (-3.4% per year).

In value terms, Cyprus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Egypt, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($X), with a 1.6% share of total imports.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Cyprus stood at -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lebanon (+0.3% per year) and Turkey (-9.2% per year).

In 2021, the average carob import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -25.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
