In 2021, overseas shipments of caustic soda decreased by -19.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -37.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, caustic soda exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Turkey (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main destinations of caustic soda exports from Egypt, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Greece ($X) constituted the largest markets for caustic soda exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 91% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Greece, with a CAGR of +3.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average caustic soda export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (-3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Egypt

In 2021, approx. X tons of caustic soda were imported into Egypt; surging by 13% compared with the year before. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 156%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, caustic soda imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Oman (X tons) were the main suppliers of caustic soda imports to Egypt, with a combined 42% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Poland, Russia, China, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +89.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest caustic soda suppliers to Egypt were Turkey ($X), Romania ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 47% of total imports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +66.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average caustic soda import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -8.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (-0.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
