In 2021, the Egyptian chewing gum market increased by 12% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Chewing gum consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Sudan (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main destinations of chewing gum exports from Egypt, together accounting for 75% of total exports. These countries were followed by Yemen, Libya, Cameroon, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for chewing gum exported from Egypt were Sudan ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 86% of total exports.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chewing gum imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports faced a dramatic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 260%.
