Saudi Arabia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of chili and pepper exports from Egypt, together comprising 77% of total exports. Seychelles, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Maldives and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Imports into Egypt

In 2022, overseas purchases of chilies and peppers (green) increased by 26% to X kg for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 353% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 165%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X kg) constituted the largest chili and pepper supplier to Egypt, with a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, chili and pepper imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X kg), threefold. Brazil (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands stood at -10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-17.9% per year) and Brazil (+20.3% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chilies and peppers (green) to Egypt, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 2.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands amounted to -14.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-22.2% per year) and Brazil (+1.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average chili and pepper import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 100%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+44.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
