Exports from Egypt
In 2022, exports of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa from Egypt fell significantly to X tons, shrinking by -42.3% against the year before. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 29,137% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chocolate exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22,322%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for chocolate exports from Egypt, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, chocolate exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sudan (X tons), fourfold. Yemen (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia amounted to +5.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+33.8% per year) and Yemen (+46.8% per year).
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa exports from Egypt, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sudan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Yemen, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Saudi Arabia amounted to +4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+64.5% per year) and Yemen (+62.6% per year).

The average chocolate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+22.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt
In 2022, the amount of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa imported into Egypt declined sharply to X tons, reducing by -33.3% on the year before. Overall, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 122%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chocolate imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 104%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Turkey (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of chocolate imports to Egypt, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Ireland, Greece, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, France, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +199.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Belgium ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest chocolate suppliers to Egypt, together comprising 72% of total imports. Ireland, Greece, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, France, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Ireland, with a CAGR of +244.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average chocolate import price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Lebanon ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+21.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
