Imports into Egypt
In 2022, purchases abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -19.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 129%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main suppliers of imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Egypt, with a combined 97% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +61.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Kenya ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre suppliers to Egypt, together accounting for 97% of total imports.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +47.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Philippines ($X per ton) and Tanzania ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
